Progress Education Institute
NCLB places increased emphasis on teacher qualification. It includes a requirement that any teacher of a core subject (e.g. English, Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Civics and Government, Geography, Economics, Arts, and Foreign Language) must be "highly qualified." A highly qualified teacher must have a bachelor's degree, full state certification, and licensure as defined by that state, and have demonstrated competency in each core subject taught. Additionally, NCLB paraprofessionals in instructional roles are required to have at least two years of higher level education or an associate's degree.
In response to this demand for more, highly qualified teachers, Progress entered into a partnership, in August 2004, with Nova Southeastern University's Fischler College of Education ("Nova"), one of America's largest degree granting, distance learning programs. Under the terms of the agreement, the Company and Nova formed the Progress Education Institute (PEI) to provide degree programs in Performance Based Teaching and Learning for para-professionals, teachers, and administrators. Progress Education Institute offers the following degrees granted by Nova:
- Associate of Arts with an emphasis in Education, Early Education, or Exceptional Student Education
- Masters in Education with an emphasis in Performance-based Teaching and Learning
- Educational Specialist Degree with an emphasis in Teaching and Learning
- Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership
Progress Education Institute is differentiated from other distance learning universities in the following ways:
- Revolutionary price points for the participant;
- Unparalleled efficiency in course and degree completion;
- Completely "differentiated" learning for the participant, tailored to national, state and district standards;
- Specific learning experiences tailored to the measured needs of the program participant as a "job imbedded opportunity";
- Little or no "face time" requirement with no loss of academic rigor, sense of community, or effective instruction;
- An education experience that can build a "career path" for the educator from the associate degree through the doctorate;
- An experience fully aligned to support NCLB "highly qualified," AYP, and "scientifically proven" requirements at every level; and,
- A program fully responsive to both the acute professional shortages at every level of education (predicted widely to get much worse), as well as the highly specialized staffing needs created by an ever diversifying client group.
